最近、私たちの生活はとても便利になってきている。スマートフォンを使えば、数秒で知りたいことを調べることができるし、天気予報や電車の時間、レストランの予約もすぐにできる。さらに、ネットショッピングを使えば、家にいながら買い物ができて、次の日にはもう商品が届く。コンビニやスーパーも深夜まで営業していて、いつでも必要なものが手に入るようになった。
こうした便利さは、たしかに私たちの生活を豊かにしている。しかし、その一方で、私たちは便利さに頼りすぎて、大切な何かを失っているのではないか、と感じることもある。たとえば、昔は道に迷ったとき、人に声をかけて道を聞くのが普通だった。知らない人との会話を通して、思わぬ情報を得たり、親切な人に出会ったりすることもあった。しかし、今ではスマホで地図を見ればすぐに答えが出るため、誰かに聞く必要はなくなった。
また、買い物も同じだ。昔は商店街に行って、店の人と話しながら商品を選ぶことが当たり前だった。商品のことを教えてもらったり、世間話をしたりすることで、店とのつながりや地域との関係も生まれていた。けれども、ネットショッピングが主流になると、そうしたやり取りはほとんどなくなり、人と人とのつながりが薄くなってきているように感じる。
もちろん、便利な社会は悪いことではない。忙しい現代人にとって、時間を節約できることはとてもありがたい。しかし、すべてを効率よく、早く済ませることばかりを求めると、知らないうちに人との関係や、小さな発見を失ってしまうのではないかと思う。だからこそ、便利さに感謝しつつも、「便利であること」が本当に自分たちの幸せにつながっているのかを時々立ち止まって考えることが、大切なのではないだろうか。
These days, our lives have become extremely convenient. With a smartphone, you can look up anything in just a few seconds. You can also check the weather forecast, train times, or make restaurant reservations right away. With online shopping, you can buy things from home and receive them the very next day. Convenience stores and supermarkets are open late into the night, so you can get whatever you need at almost any time.
This convenience certainly makes our lives richer. However, at the same time, we may be losing something important by relying too much on convenience. For example, in the past, when people got lost, they would naturally ask someone for directions. Through those conversations, they might receive unexpected information or encounter kind strangers. But now, we just check a map on our phones and don’t need to talk to anyone.
Shopping has also changed. In the past, people used to visit shopping streets and talk with shopkeepers while choosing products. They would get helpful advice and engage in small talk, which helped create relationships with the shops and within the community. But now that online shopping is common, these kinds of interactions have nearly disappeared, and it feels like human connections are becoming weaker.
Of course, a convenient society isn’t a bad thing. For busy people today, saving time is very helpful. However, if we always focus only on efficiency and getting things done quickly, we may unknowingly lose our relationships with others and the small discoveries in everyday life. That’s why, while being grateful for convenience, it’s also important to stop and think once in a while: is all this convenience really making us happier?
